Since 13th July 2023, one of the NOAA-21 ATMS quality flags has been set continuously for global data from NOAA. This is the SDR Granule flag QF1, which gets put into the BUFR field ‘granuleLevelQualityFlags’ (0-33-079). This does not currently affect direct broadcast processing (e.g. DBNet).

If you use the AAPP eccodes_decodebufr_1c utility, you will find that brightness temperatures are being set to missing, because of a check on this flag. You can disable this check by editing eccodes_get_1c_atms.F and changing “1849” to “825” at lines 423 and 444. This is a mask for the granule quality flag.

NOAA are aware of the issue. They say: “It has been identified the issue is related to the latest IDPS release. The team is working on submitting an updated table to resolve the issue. Once ready we will have it implemented in operation soon to fix it.”

Because NOAA are planning to fix it, we do not foresee a permanent change in AAPP, but can keep this under review.

    Regards,

    Nigel
