Radiance data quality assessments

Radiance data quality assessments

Reports will be provided on the assessment of new satellite radiance data shortly after new missions are launched and data becomes available.  The assessment will be coordinated across two NWP SAF partners (Met Office and DWD) to provide a comprehensive and timely appraisal of key datasets after launch, made available to the wider NWP community in order to accelerate the exploitation of the data in operational NWP.  In addition, these assessment reports will provide valuable input to satellite agency coordinated post-launch Cal/Val programmes by identifying issues with instrument and ground-processing systems performance at the earliest opportunity.

Quality assessment reports aim to include:

  • Evaluation of departure statistics (time series & comparison with equivalent instruments);
  • Identification and quantification of biases and noise amplitude / sources;
  • Evaluation of the effectiveness of current bias correction schemes;
  • Description of recommended initial approaches to quality control and channel selection, together with initial results of any assimilation experiments (if available);
  • Recommendations to satellite agencies on any changes to instrument design, pre-launch characterisation and ground processing
