You will have seen the announcement from EUMETSAT concerning the planned end of life for Metop-A:

    https://www.eumetsat.int/plans-metop-end-life

According to the announcement, all IASI-A data services (global, local, regional) will end on 15th October 2021.

EUMETSAT have now informed us that some of the IASI-A tests have already started, and users are advised to stop processing IASI-A direct broadcast data using OPS-LRS, because the result of the processing will be unpredictable. In detail:

“Starting tomorrow (Sep. 16th) we will in particular start the test with a reduced swath width. This test and the following ones will imply quick changes of the ground configurations so that the global data processing is ensured. We won’t be able to update the regional processing accordingly so the regional processing for IASI-A should be ended now (even if the processing is not crashing the products will be anyway unusable). IASI-B and C are still nominal of course.”

    Regards,

    Nigel

Update: A scanning table upload was performed on the morning of Sep 16th, but it did not have the expected result – IASI-A is still scanning at the old swath of >2000 km. OPS-LRS still runs and gives meaningful results. However the global data are not valid as the ground configuration had been changed to match the expected reduced swath.

A new upload will be performed by EUMETSAT soon.

The new upload has now been done, so IASI-A really is in reduced swath mode now.

OPS-LRS still runs for IASI-A, but the geolocation in level 1c is invalid (as expected). The “iasi1c_GQisQualIndexLoc” is set to 500 indicating that the AVHRR/IASI geolocation error is large.

As these data are not useful for NWP, our original recommendation stands that users should stop processing IASI from Metop-A.
