    Hello,

I am an user of the RTTOV v12.3 software. There are three options for the settings of ice_scheme for the VIS/NIR simulations. I am confused with the differences between the Baran 2014 ice scheme (ice_scheme=2) and the Baran 2018 ice scheme (ice_scheme=3). The Baran 2014 ice scheme was detailed in a paper by Vidot et al. (2015) (Vidot, J., A. J. Baran, and P. Brunel (2015), A new ice cloud parameterization for infrared radiative transfer simulation of cloudy radiances: Evaluation and optimization with IIR observations and ice cloud profile retrieval products, J. Geophys. Res. Atmos., 120, 6937–6951, doi:10.1002/2015JD023462). Are there some references to the Baran 2018 ice scheme (ice_scheme=3)?

    Best wishes,
    Yongbo

    Hi Yongbo,

The Baran 2018 scheme is described in section 3.4.2 of the RTTOV v13 Science and Validation Report:

    Hi James,

Thank you very much for providing me with the material which introduced the Baran 2018 ice scheme.
Following the bug fix instruction on https://nwp-saf.eumetsat.int/site/software/rttov/rttov-v12/code-updates/, the Baran2018-related fortran codes were updated. RTTOV was re-compliled and the re-simulated synthetic visible satellite image was similar to the observed image. Therefore, all my problems have been properly resolved.

    Best regards,
    Yongbo Zhou
