Hello, I’m currently using the hydrotable file “hydrotable_gpm_gmi.dat” downloaded from the official website. At first, I changed the polarisation of the five default hydrometeors from 0.0 to 0.3, and there was a significant change in the brightness temperature. However, when I further changed the shape of snow or cloud ice based on this modification, the brightness temperature no longer changed at all. Also, I tried changing the density model of rain on the basis of the polarisation change, but the simulated brightness temperature still showed no change. This situation has been bothering me all the time, and I can’t figure out the reason. I would like to know if there are any errors in my operation or if there are some limitations in the model itself.
Thank you very much for your help.
    Best regards,
    [Yi Ding]

    Hi Yi Ding,

I would suggest caution in modifying the polarisation settings in the hydrotable. These settings are very experimental and should only be used if you fully understand what you are doing.

The configuration section at the top of the hydrotable files is a record of how the hydrotables were generated. Editing the configuration does not change the optical optical properties in the file. Instead you need to create a channels.dat file (see examples in the src/mw_scatt_coef/ folder) with your modified configuration and then use this to generate a new hydrotable. See the src/mw_scatt_coef/readme.txt file which explains how the hydrotable generation software works.

    Best wishes,
    James
