    Hello,
My group (GINA, at the University of Alaska Fairbanks), provides direct broadcast data from metop-c who use the data to generate snowfall rate products.

Recently, they noticed an issue with amsu-a channel 4 from metop-c:
    > For chan4, the cal_coefs are all zero, so chan4 is bad. SFR algorithm needs chan4.
    > I also checked NOAA SCDR data, the “cal_coef” of corresponding scanlines are not zero, so the data , which is not DB, are OK.

Is there something wrong with channel 4, or are we processing the data wrong?

    Thanks,
    -Jay

    Dear Jay,

Thanks for the post. Channel 4 is still working, but it is becoming increasingly noisy, as you can see from the NOAA STAR plots. (If you choose a NEDT plot for channel 4 from 1st May you will get the complete NEDT history for this channel; with the current date you only get recent days). The noise is now 1.5K. So eventually it may fail completely.

We are currently preparing AAPP v8.15 which will include (among other things) a new amsua_clparams.dat file, but in the meantime I have updated the file at https://nwp-saf.eumetsat.int/downloads/aapp_data_files/atovs_cal_files/. Please download it and replace the version that is in your AAPP installation directory. This should restore calibration.

    Regards,

    Nigel

Thanks – I updated the amsua_clparams.dat file and the data looks better. I will follow up with the group that originally noticed the issue with data my group is generating to make sure it is resolved.
    Thanks again!
