Subject: Inquiry on Access to 2016 Dataset and Training Profiles for IR
Dear RTTOV Team,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to inquire about specific datasets and resources that are crucial for a project I am currently undertaking, which involves training atmospheric transmittance coefficients for infrared hyperspectral radiometers.
I have learned that RTTOV has been instrumental in providing valuable data and tools in this area of research. My project specifically requires access to datasets from the year 2016. Could you please guide me on where I can download this particular dataset?
Additionally, I am in need of training profiles, ideally a set of 83 training profiles, with a focus on SO2 gas. These profiles are essential for the calibration and validation of our models. I am particularly interested in any data or profiles that include SO2, given its significant impact on atmospheric observations and modeling.
Understanding that these resources are in high demand and appreciating the effort that goes into maintaining and distributing them, I would be grateful for any assistance or guidance you can provide. If there are any protocols or requirements for accessing these datasets and profiles, please let me know so that I can comply accordingly.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response and any assistance you can provide in facilitating my research.
Best regards,
Cole Chan

We have a set of synthetic SO2 profiles that were developed for training RTTOV optical depth coefficients for simulations that allow variable SO2 profiles. The profiles are intended to broadly represent a combination of clean background (anthropoengic, low concentration) cases, along with some much higher concentration volcanic cases. They are constructed from Gaussian functions of varying width, height, and amplitude, representing a variety of cases.
These are used alongside the pre-existing set of 83 profiles used for training RTTOV coefficients, so they bear no relation to the temperature or other gas concentrations.
Does this sound useful for your application?
Best wishes,
James -
