Sources of Emissivity Data for RTTOV Users

Microwave Emissivity Atlases

Global gridded monthly mean Aqua/AMSR-E emissivities (EIA= 55º).
Frequencies: 10.65 to 89 GHz. FOV size: 51km x 29km. Earth grid: 28 km sinusoidal grid. Note: due to reliance on MODIS LST from MODIS day/night algorithm, no data are currently produced over Polar Regions in the summer and winter seasons.

  • Frequencies: 19V&H, 22V, 37V&H, 85V&H
  • Horizontal resolution: 0.25 equal-area grid or 1degree regular grid
  • Time resolution: Monthly means
  • Period: from 1992 to 2004.
  • Statistics: Monthly covariance matrices of the emissivities
  • Additional tool: frequency/angular/polarization interpolator tool.

CNRM Emissivity Estimates

  • Global land surface emissivity atlases computed using observations from different sensors including:
    • AMSU-A: frequencies 23, 31, 50 and 89GHZ, atlases for high and low zenith angles
    • AMSU-B: frequencies 89 and 150 GHz, atlases for high and low zenith angles
    • SSMI/I: frequencies 19V, 19H, 22V, 37V, 37H, 85V, 85H
    • Period: few months in 2005, 2006 and 2007
  • A land emissivity model suitable for use for AMSU-A and AMSU-B observations.

Microwave Emission Models
  • Snowtools database composed of :
MODEL : A thermal semi-empirical Microwave Emission Model of Layered Snowpacks (MEMLS) was developed for the frequency range, 5 to 100 GHz.
  • DATABASE : passive MW, active MW, optical and dielectric datasets of
    snow signatures.

JCSDA Microwave Emission Model

A microwave emission model applicable from frequencies from 10-300 GHz. Included as part of the Joint Centers for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM). Includes parameterizations for snow and ice emissivities.
