{"id":3823,"date":"2016-02-11T13:37:58","date_gmt":"2016-02-11T13:37:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nwpsaf.eu\/site\/?page_id=3823"},"modified":"2022-10-14T14:48:14","modified_gmt":"2022-10-14T14:48:14","slug":"penwp","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/nwp-saf.eumetsat.int\/site\/software\/scatterometer\/penwp\/","title":{"rendered":"PenWP"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Introduction<\/h2>\n<p><small><strong>Current version:<\/strong> v4.0, October 2022<br \/>\n<\/small><\/p>\n<p>The Pencil Beam Wind Processor (PenWP) is a software package written mainly in Fortran 90 for handling data from the SeaWinds (on QuikSCAT or ADEOS-II), OSCAT (on Oceansat-2 and ScatSat-1), HSCAT (on HY-2A, HY-2B, HY-2c, and HY-2D) and RapidScat (on the International Space Station) scatterometer instruments.<\/p>\n<p>PenWP is intended to be a generic wind processor for <em>Ku<\/em>-band pencil beam scatterometer data.<\/p>\n<p>It will be adapted to handle data from future instruments like the OSCAT successor <strong>on Oceansat-3<\/strong> (from ISRO) once they become available.<\/p>\n<p>PenWP generates surface winds based on pencil beam radar backscatter data. It allows performing the ambiguity removal with the Two-dimensional Variational Ambiguity Removal (2DVAR) method and it supports the Multiple Solution Scheme (MSS).<\/p>\n<p>The output of PenWP consists of wind vectors which represent surface winds within the ground swath of the scatterometer.<\/p>\n<p>Input of PenWP is Normalized Radar Cross Section (NRCS) data (in <a href=\"https:\/\/software.ecmwf.int\/wiki\/display\/BUFR\/BUFRDC+Home\">BUFR<\/a> format &#8211; conversion tools from HDF5 are provided in the package). Output is written using the SeaWinds BUFR template or the KNMI BUFR template with generic wind section.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the scatterometer input data, PenWP needs Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) model winds as a first guess for the Ambiguity Removal step. These data need to be provided in <a href=\"https:\/\/software.ecmwf.int\/wiki\/display\/GRIB\/Home\">GRIB<\/a> edition 1 or 2.<\/p>\n<p>Documentation is available <a href=\"https:\/\/nwp-saf.eumetsat.int\/site\/software\/scatterometer\/penwp\/documentation\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Support for PenWP is provided by the OSI SAF.
