############################################################################## # # # ATOVS and AVHRR Processing Package (AAPP) # # Version 4.0 Release Notes # # # ############################################################################## Some important notes on the current distribution of the AAPP package: 1. This distribution of AAPP (Version 4.0) integrates the versions 3.0 to 3.7, and addresses the list of known bugs and problems on EUMETSAT's AAPP webpage. However, some portability problems might still require manual adaptation during the intallation process, particularly if a Fortran90 compiler is used in preference to Fortran77. Details are given in section 3.2.2 of the Installation Guide. 2. An additional improvement in AAPP V4.0 is the addition of code in the level 1b to 1c processing to take account of the effect when the moon is in the space view of AMSU-A. 3. AAPP Version 4.0 contains all modules for the processing of TOVS and ATOVS data to level 1b, 1c and 1d data and for mapping AVHRR data onto the HIRS data grid. Both TOVS and ATOVS modules have been tested with space based data. Examples from this are included in this distribution, with all necessary input data to conduct the same test and all output results to allow comparison with your own test. 4. For AAPP V4.0 there has been some rationalisation of the documentation. Obsolete documentation from earlier releases has been removed, and a new overview document and a new data formats document have been added. 5. Any comments and proposals for improvements are welcome. Please see the information on AAPP on EUMETSAT's and the NWP SAF's web pages, and email ops@eumetsat.de or aapp.nwpsaf@metoffice.com. The CD-ROM AAPP_V4.0 contains this readme file and the following nine directories: 1. AAPP_4/ contains the AAPP package version 4.0 including the software modules and the required data files. Information on how to install and run AAPP can be found in the README.INS file and in the Installation Guide in directory INSTGUID. 2. DOCS/ contains a set of AAPP documentation. File README.APP provides more details. 3. HRPTDATA/ NOAA-14 (TOVS) and NOAA-16 (ATOVS) test input data. 4. INSTGUID/ contains the Installation Guide, HTML-formatted. File README.GID describes how to read the pages. 5. INST_LOG/ contains log and err files produced by the installation process and the file ATOV_ENV that is a copy of the global variables file ATOVS_ENV produced in the ${HOME} directory by the installation process. 6. N14_LOG/ contains log and err files of the NOAA-14 chain run and its processing steps. 7. N14_OUT/ contains level 1b, 1c and 1d output files of the NOAA-14 chain run. 8. N16_LOG/ contains log and err files of the NOAA-16 chain run and its processing steps. 9. N16_OUT/ contains level 1b, 1c and 1d output files of the NOAA-16 chain run. Note: The CD-ROM burning software appends a version number ";1" (and ".;1" if the file name has no suffix) at the end of each file name. This appendix is not visible on most systems. If you can see it on your system then strip it off by renaming the files. Note: The names of the files on the AAPP V4 CD-ROM are with capital letters. Nevertheless, on some systems, it may happen that you see the names with small letters. Take this into account when following the instructions of the installation guide where the files are referenced with capital letters.
